Helen Antill
Landscape Artist

Daily walking was something I took up when I lived in the Brecon Beacons (now Bannau Brycheiniog). Our home was in a valley at the foot of Pen-Y-Fan. The mountain almost filled the view from the sitting room window, with a small strip of sky. It was stark, often dramatic, and always beautiful.

Being out in that landscape, in all seasons and in all weathers, created an awareness and sensitivity to it that I hadn’t had as an artist before. My painting became more animated, more gestural and intuitive.

I now live in the Shropshire Hills, which share a similar language of colour, form and texture. In watching the light morph, the rain fall, even the earth change colour, my paintings are now like collages of a hundred different distilled memories of this immersion. Intuitive and emotional responses to a landscape I have become preoccupied with.

Along with my own practice I have taught Art professionally for over 25 years.

New workshop!

Expressive Responses to the Landscape.

Saturday 26th April.

10.30-1.30pm at Pale Kitchen and Arts, Ludlow.

£50pp. 8 places available.

Please book by using the contact details below.

An additional element of this workshop will be showing you how to make your work into a 'Z' book (sometimes called an 'accordion book). If you haven't made one of these before, they are incredibly simple and use only upcycled materials! This part of the workshop is entirely optional, as you may prefer to leave the work you make as finished 'paintings', but they are alot of fun to make.

This workshop is going to focus on loosening up the way we respond to the landscape (and natural forms) through expressive mark-making. We'll use collage materials, ink, acrylic paint, charcoal and other drawing tools/media, so the results will be lively and varied and very individual.

Drawing

I take a sketchbook when I walk, sometimes using colour, but mostly just observing, committing details to memory. I don't tend to refer to these drawings when I make paintings, however.
